How to Link Your Google Workspace / Gmail Account to SMTP Ghost

Activate IMAP (video below)

  1. Open Gmail on your computer and login.
  2. Click on Settings (gear icon in the top right corner) .
  3. In the dropdown menu, click on 'See all settings'.
  4. In the settings menu, select the 'Forwarding and POP/IMAP' tab.
  5. In the 'IMAP access' section, click to select 'Enable IMAP'.
  6. At the bottom of the page, click 'Save Changes'.


Gmail users with a personal Google Account

In June 2024, the option to choose “Enable IMAP” or “Disable IMAP” won't be available. IMAP access is always turned on in Gmail, and your current connections to other email clients aren’t affected. You don’t need to take any action.

Set Up 2-Step Verification and Generate an App Password


Important: To create an app password, you need 2-Step Verification on your Google Account.


  1. Go to your Google Account.
  2. Select Security.
  3. Under "Signing in to Google," select 2-Step Verification.
  4. At the bottom of the page, select App passwords.
  5. Enter a name that helps you remember where you’ll use the app password.
    1. In the 'App passwords' section, in the 'Select app' dropdown, choose 'Mail'. In the 'Select device' dropdown, choose 'Other (Custom)' and type in SMTP Ghost.
  6. Select Generate.
  7. Copy the app password and keep it safe. After leaving this page, you won't be able to see it again. 

  8. Click 'Done'.
